Elliot Hooper's troubles are far from over: his mum's health worsens, he's struggling at school, and a bunch of anarchic Greek immortals have moved into his home - including teen goddess Virgo, who's in trouble with the Zodiac. What's more, death-daemon Thanatos and his scary mum are at large. As even more immortal allies and enemies emerge, Virgo and Elliot must learn how to be heroes ...

Elliot is just a normal boy. He lives on a farm with his mum and, oh yeah, a bunch of gods. After releasing Thanatos, daemon of death, can Elliot and his immortal friends find the chaos stones before Thanatos and his mum and save the world?

This amazing book was easy to pick up and impossible to put down! It was a lot funny and also a bit sad, it was well written and it’s a must for any reader – just ask my mum!

There were a couple of parts that were my favourite, both for different reasons. The first one made me laugh so hard and involved some singing and dancing outside a famous London landmark – I can’t say more than that! – and the other one was really emotional but it did make me a tiny bit happy too – again, I can’t say more than that but you’ll know when you get there.

My favourite character was Hermes because he made me laugh sooooo much but also because I liked how he looked out for Elliot like a big brother would. I liked how the story showed that it doesn’t matter that you’re not related to people, they can still be your family and look after you and want to make sure you’re OK. That was super bosh!

When this book came in the post, me and Casper were fighting (not actual fighting though!) over who got to read it first! I was lucky because Casper went out to his friend’s house that night and didn’t take the book with him so I got to start reading it. I hid it under my pillow before he got back! In the end, we both wanted to read it so much that we kept swapping over and reading a few chapters each.

I liked everything that Casper liked but I think that Virgo was soooo annoying! There are girls in my class like that and Virgo reminded me of them! My favourite part involved bazookas! It still makes me laugh when I think about that part!

Win a copy of Simply The Quest

Mum loves these books so much that we’ve ended up with THREE copies of Simply The Quest! We were sent a copy by Chicken House. Then Mum ordered signed copies of both books. And THEN Amazon sent us the copy of Simply The Quest that Mum had pre-ordered and forgotten about! So, this means we have a spare unsigned paperback and we’d like to give it away.

We would love to know who your favourite character is from this series. If you haven’t started reading this series yet, we would love it if you could recommend a children’s book to us. Leave a comment to let us know.

We’ll pick a winner from the comments on 24/08 (Mum’s birthday!) and we can only send it if you live in the UK.

  1. This book looks great! Thanks for reviewing it! I will definitely be recommending this to my class this year in my first year as a teacher- a free copy would be amazing!! I will also be making a poster of your blog and book reviews for my book corner to help them in making their own great choices for reading! I haven’t read this book before (yet) so don’t have a favourite character! My experience as a teacher so far has been in key stage 1, Early Years and SEN so haven’t really got lots of experience of modern books for KS2. My favourites to reccomend for you would be Goodnight Mr Tom, The Twits, Kensukes Kingdom and Holes! Happy reading!

  2. Hi, think I would enjoy this book as would my nieces. Am a KS1 teacher so have been reading lots of picture books by Steve Anthony and Jon Klassen. I also love The Colour Monster.

    1. Hello Caroline,

Confratulations! You’ve won the copy of Simply The Quest.

Please will you send us a message on Twitter to tell us your address?

      Kelly (the boys’ mum)

  3. This book sounds excellent! It’s had great reviews. I haven’t read them but my recommendation would be an older book called ‘The Looking Glass Wars’ by Frank Bedford. It’s a new twist on Alice in Wonderland and I loved it (it’s a trilogy).

  4. Hi, I’ve not read any of these yet, but I am sure there are some children in my school that have! I’ll ask around. I like books that make me laugh out loud and cry a little bit too!

  5. What a brilliant review! Now I’ll have to buy this book – along with Who Let The Gods Out? – for my class!

  6. I love Elliot. He’s a real trooper! It must be tricky living with all that chaos but he’s brace too – looking after his mum for so long by himself.
Thanks for the chance to win!
